Shearing

Shearing Day

The flock is professionally sheared each spring.  Their annual haircut is necessary for the animal’s health and comfort.  The sheep are treated gently and with respect to minimize stress and avoid injury. Shearing is done in a fashion that the desirable fleece remains intact so it can be laid out for skirting.

Skirting is a process of laying out each fleece on a slatted table and picking through the fleeces to remove the “bad stuff”.  Each skirted fleece is rolled and placed in their own labeled bag for temporary storage.  Each fleece is processed individually from shearing through to milling.

Shearing is traditionally been an event that brings the community together.  We continue this practice by welcoming visitors and helpers on shearing day.   Watch for shearing dates to be announced on our Facebook site.
